Description

Apple French Toast Casserole is the ultimate comfort food for cozy mornings. This stress-free, make-ahead breakfast features cubes of hearty, crusty bread soaked in a rich, cinnamon-spiced custard and layered with tender, sweet apples. Baked to perfection, the casserole offers a delightful contrast between a crispy, buttery crumble topping and a velvety, soft interior, reminiscent of a breakfast bread pudding. It is an ideal, soul-warming choice for hosting holiday brunches or enjoying a slow weekend with loved ones.

Ingredients

Scale

1 loaf French bread, cubed
2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cubed
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar (for topping)
2 tablespoons white sugar (for topping)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the cubed bread and apples together and transfer to the prepared dish.
Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, white sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl.
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apples.
In a small bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter to create a crumb topping.
Sprinkle the topping over the casserole.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden and set.

Notes

Use stale, day-old bread for the best texture as it absorbs the custard better. You can substitute French bread with brioche, challah, or any crusty sourdough. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or microwave.
